The Best Ways To Watch Your Weight Over The Holidays

By Millicent Petrie

Losing weight during the holiday season can seem almost impossible with all of the activities and temptations. Let's face it- it can be very hard to avoid food during the last couple of months of the year. It starts with the Halloween candy, peaks with Thanksgiving dinner and then comes to a resounding finish with Christmas dinner (if you celebrate Christmas) and a nice encore of hors d'oeuvres at New Years Eve parties. There's just no escaping it! Is there any hope if we want to maintain our diets and exercise programs over the holidays? We'll now explore some techniques for staying on track with your weight loss goals despite all of the holiday distractions and temptations you may face.

Make sure you watch the portions you consume. Pay attention to the size of your plates, and don't feel obligated to heap on as much food as they can hold.

Eat what you want, but in small quantities. Your plate shouldn't feel so heavy you have to carry it with two hands. This way you can have some of all of the foods you want to eat without having to worry that you are completely undoing all of the hard work that you have done. Limiting your portions is something to keep in mind at all times, but many people forget about it when November and December roll around. So, rather than having a list of foods you have to stay away from, focus instead on controlling your portion sizes. It's quite common for people to eat a lot more than normal during a holiday meal. Some people even take to wearing looser fitting clothing like sweatpants this time of year. If you want to control yourself, stick to articles of clothing that fit snugly. If you wear a belt, make sure it doesn't give you much leeway. Here is the key: make sure that you will not be able to take off that belt -at least not without people looking at you as if you had gone crazy. As taking off your belt in public would look rather strange, you'll probably opt for the easier route of limiting your intake of food.

When people drink, they're also more likely to eat more and forget about their diet, a rational thinking goes out the window.

There are lots of ways to watch your weight and to even shed pounds during the holidays. We tend to believe that the holidays are a time for gaining weight, but they do not have to be. You don't have to skip the holiday feasts everyone enjoys or even the occasional treat, as long as you keep your diet and exercise program in mind most of the time.
