Essential Tools for Diabetics

those who are diagnosed with diabetes there will have to be an inevitable total shift in lifestyle if you are to stay healthy now and especially down the road in your future as you get older. Watching the foods that you consume especially is a must. Regular exercise on an ongoing and regular basis will be a requirement also if you are to maintain control of your glucose levels. Here are a few items that you will have to learn about and keep in you diabetic tool kit.

Most importantly you will need to have a meter for reading your glucose levels throughout the day, also known as a glucometer. This measures the amount of glucose or sugar that is in your blood stream. Another term for this is called HBGM which stands for "Home Blood Glucose Monitoring". This monitoring piece is essential for controlling diabetes. It requires a finger prick to get a drop of blood which is placed on a disposable test strip and then inserted into the glucometer to get a reading of your glucose.

For those suffering from either high or low glucose the glucometer is very important. High glucose is referred to as hyperglycemia and low glucose as hypoglycemia. If you are new to diabetes testing you may need to do several testings throughout the day to find out how your body reacts and handles blood sugar because everyone is different. What you are trying to attain is glucose stability throughout your day.

There are many types of glucose meter and are produced by numerous manufacturers. The devices have different technology built into them. Some you just manually take a reading and write it into your glucose log book and some store your readings that you can later download to your computer for analysis and adjusting your dosage. The devices only take a few seconds to take the reading.

The diabetic test strips are disposable and one use only. They need to be the right test strips for your meter. The blood sample can be dropped onto the strips or drawn into them. It is important that the meter and the test strips be matched to ensure you get an accurate reading.

If you require that you will need insulin injections you will need to ensure that you always have a ready supply of them on hand. Syringes are also a disposable one time use only item. Most of the time diabetics buy these in bulk but just as importantly need to have the medical insulin on hand at all times. Most insulin requires that it be refrigerated so if you are out for an extended time or traveling you will want to have a cooler to keep it cold.

For those with a more severe case of diabetes your doctor may require a temporary continuous reading 24 hours a day for a several day period. This is known as Continuous Glucose Monitoring or just CGM. The doctor will insert a sensor just under the skin in the abdomen area, it will have a wire and be connected to a small device.

This device will get a glucose reading about every 5 minutes and record it. During the testing period a log needs to be kept of what was eaten, what physical activity was undertaken and the exact time. After the CGM is done the doctor will remove the sensor and download all the data to a computer along with all the information in your log that corresponds to the same times. This way the specialist can look for trends of high and low glucose, how your glucose reacts to physical activity and food throughout the day and makes the proper recommendation for you specifically to control your glucose.

There are many diabetic products on the market like insulin pens which are preloaded with the insulin and are very portable and discreet, medical alert bracelets which should be worn if you suffer from big fluctuations in glucose, glucose logs syringes, diabetic supplements, books aids, software for tracking and more.

The diabetic diet and exercise are the key to controlling diabetes. The diabetic meal plan should be low in carbohydrates and use sugar substitute along with proper exercise.

Many report that there is no cure for diabetes but there is significant data that shows if a radical and complete change in diet is made to a plant based diet it has been documented as completely reversed in many patients. I think it is very possible to reverse diabetes however most people are not willing to make this radical change in diet and go with standard treatment that never cures it and leads to other complications.
People with diabetes should keep up on new developments in treating diabetes because there are some very smart people working on this. Something has to happen, America is suffering from a diabetic epidemic like never before in our history.

In the meantime keep up on monitoring, controlling and managing your glucose as best you can to enjoy life and be healthy.
