What Can Kettlebells Do For Me?

By Mike Sherman

Kettlebells and kettlebell exercises go way back, but they have just recently caught on as a substitute for going to a traditional fitness center. Kettlebells originated in Russia, where they are called giryas. They can be described as cast-iron weights that look similar to cannonballs but they have hand grips. Kettle bells come in many sizes and can weight anywhere in the range between four and one hundred seventy-nine pounds. Kettle-bells are normally labeled in kilograms due to the extensive use of the metric system across the world. There are some that may be marked in pounds though as well.

Because of their design, kettlebells are effective for core, back, leg, and shoulder strengthening. Kettlebell exercises are more of a ballistic, explosive style of workout. Kettle bells have a center of gravity that runs past the hand, unlike traditional barbell and dumbbell weights that have a center of gravity at, or in line with, the hand. This causes the need for a swinging action when using these weights. Other actions include the clean, jerk, a combination of both, and the snatch.

A lot of these movements are similar to activities that people perform on a normal day. They may emulate a person doing work in a yard or on a farm such as shoveling, lifting, and carrying.

Due to the kind of movements applied during kettlebell workouts, they can be somewhat hazardous to use. You should often seek the advice of a trained professional or join a class that offers kettlebell training. You should also consult with a professional before using kettlebells if you have back, shoulder and core problems.

Some of the objectives of kettlebell exercises are: increasing explosiveness, improving speed, fat burning, and overall endurance. Using kettlebells over free-weights can help accomplish these goals at a faster pace. Some other gains of kettlebell exercises are strengthened grip, wrists and forearms.
